187 Lockdown were a UK garage and speed garage duo from London made up of producers Danny Harrison and Julian Jonah. They became well known in the late 1990s during the rise of the UK garage scene. Their most famous track, Gunman, was first released in 1997 and quickly became very popular in clubs and on pirate radio stations across the UK. The track is known for its dark bassline, fast garage rhythm and chopped vocal samples, which helped define the speed garage sound at the time. Because of its popularity in the underground scene, the track later crossed into the mainstream and reached number 16 in the UK charts while also topping the UK Dance Chart. They later released another successful track called Kung-Fu, which also performed well in the charts and further strengthened their place in the garage scene. Even though 187 Lockdown were active for a relatively short time, their music played an important role in shaping the sound of late-1990s UK garage and continues to influence producers and DJs in the genre today.
